It was two in the morning. He went down to the lobby of his building and through the small door off to one side. This time he turned on a light in the basement rather than relying on his pathetic flashlight. He arrived at Relpher’s little maintenance den and started going through junk. He went through the drawers of the small desk and also through the large drawers of an old file cabinet next to it. There were some steel tackle boxes that he emptied. All he found was more junk, tools, and hardware, the accessories related to building maintenance. What papers there were consisted of advertising circulars and occasional notes from tenants or from the landlord about problems that needed fixing. Belkin was meticulous about his search. After an hour he discovered something in a pile of sandpaper and pieces of linoleum. It was an address book. There were no addresses written in it, but clipped to one of the pages was a small bundle of receipts. The receipts were all from 1995. They were mostly records of purchases from hardware stores for the type of stuff that was scattered around the basement. As he went through the receipts he noticed a detail that was consistent with about half of them. There was a note at the bottom that said, “Bill to Rothgar Salvage account.” He kept the receipts and then dug around for a while longer, fruitlessly. An hour and twenty minutes had passed. He ascended the steps of the basement and closed the door behind him.

In his apartment he looked up “Rothgar Salvage” on his computer. He found it on a resource site for electricians who rated parts stores.
